Eva McGauley, the Wellington teen who set up a messaging service for sexual violence victims, dies from cancer

Help, the support network for sexual abuse survivors says one in three girls in NZ may be sexually abused before they turn 16.

Eva McGauley, the Wellington teenager who created an online messaging service for sexual violence victims, has died from cancer.

Her death was confirmed on the social media pages of Eva’s Wish, the messaging service she had set up after being diagnosed with cancer in 2015.

“We are heartbroken to tell you all that Eva left us yesterday morning. It was very fast and peaceful and she was surrounded by her loved ones,” the post said.

“Thank you so much to all of you who have followed Eva's journey and supported her dreams. We expect the funeral will be later in the week in Wellington - will keep you all posted here once we've finalised the details.”

McGauley was recently recognised as a finalist of the 2018 Youth Wellys at the Wellingtonian of the Year awards after setting up Eva’s wish.

She also met with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex during their recent tour of New Zealand.
