'Especially when I was sick' - Toni thanks Mike for 'always being there' as they sign off from Seven Sharp

December 15, 2017

Toni Street thanked Mike Hosking for "always being there" for her when she was sick, as the Seven Sharp co-hosts signed off for their last time on the hit TVNZ1 show last night.

The duo were both on the brink of tears as they bowed out after four years fronting the programme together.

"Your backing of me has been fantastic this year, so thank you. Especially when I was sick, thank you for always being there," Toni said to Mike.

After several years of poor health, Toni was diagnosed with a very rare autoimmune condition in 2015.

She told viewers last night that just like Mike, she was a little nervous when asked to host Seven Sharp, as she was enjoying hosting Breakfast.

"But when they said the opportunity to work with you, Mike, I couldn't pass it up. And I knew we'd make a go of it," she said.

The pair made the announcement on air tonight during the penultimate show of 2017.

The announcement that the pair were leaving Seven Sharp was made live on air on Thursday night. Toni said she wants to spend more time with her family while Mike said, "Given we started together, we end together".

Toni last night thanked the viewers first for watching the show, saying, "We have had the best four years."

She also thanked Seven Sharp's producers, camera people and reporters, saying, "We are going to miss you all dearly.''

Mike agreed, saying: "This is the thing you learn about television as opposed to radio, television is resource heavy. The people behind the scene really make it. It's big machine. We're a couple of little cogs in front of it all.

"Most importantly for me, I get to go home and spend more time with my family. And that's what counts. So thank you. Merry Christmas, and you can sing us out."

The dynamic duo are stepping down from the hit show, after plenty of entertaining moments.

He handed over to Sol3 Mio who sang "Mele Kalikimaka is the thing to say on a bright Hawaiian Christmas Day" as Toni and Mike's families went on set to hand them bunches of flowers. There were hugs for the outgoing presenters from family and colleagues.

The programme also included a package of "some of the more memorable moments" from Mike and Toni's last four years on Seven Sharp and programme staff dancing to 'Happy Holiday'.

Seven Sharp will return in February with a new presenting line-up which is expected to be announced in January.
