Emergency services respond to Nelson boat fire

A Nelson fishing vessel that caught fire

More than 20 firefighters have responded to a boat fire in Nelson this morning.

A fishing vessel, approximately 22 metres long, was docked at Dogleg Wharf at Nelson Port when the fire started.

It's thought that hot pieces from a welding operation fell onto rags in the engine room below, which began to smolder.

The crew on board then alerted emergency services, with five fire engines sent to the scene.

The fire was contained to the engine room and has been extinguished.
