Eliza McCartney competes on Gold Coast today, defends her self-imposed supplements ban

April 12, 2018

The Olympic bronze medallist says she won’t risk anything that could contaminate her body.

Kiwi pole vaulter Eliza McCartney competes at the Commonwealth Games today, standing by her stance against using supplements.

Seven Sharp reported the multi-billion dollar supplement industry has nothing for the Olympic bronze medallist.

"I don't want to risk anything that could contaminate my body with something that would be illegal in sport anyway, which can happen with supplements very occasionally," McCartney said.

"I think people get that now, and the whole idea that you need to be so careful what you put into your body as a professional athlete," she added.

"I don't need supplements to retain muscle or jump higher or anything like that in my sport. I can just eat what a normal person would eat to be healthy."

Other New Zealand team members Seven Sharp spoke to on the Gold Coast didn't share McCartney's stance, including shot put world champion Tom Walsh.

"She doesn't need to be 130kg. Look, if i didn't have supplements I couldn't get to the weight I am," Walsh said.
