Elderly widow left hospitalised, 'extremely shaken' after home invasion in Northland

An 92-year-old woman living alone was assaulted during a home invasion overnight in Northland, with police hunting for the female offenders.

Detective Sergeant Greg Johnson said that two women approached the front door of the rural Kawakawa property asking for fuel.

It was reported the elderly woman was then attacked, before her home was searched and items were taken.

"This is an absolutely appalling incident and we know the local community in Kawakawa will be shocked and angered at how a vulnerable member of the community has been targeted," Detective Sergeant Johnson said.

The alleged offenders left in a tan coloured older hatchback/liftback-style car that had damage to the front.

"The female offenders are described as Māori, aged in their early- to mid-twenties and of medium build," police said.

The elderly woman is recovering in hospital "and is understandably extremely shaken".
