A 7.4 magnitude earthquake has struck off of New Zealand’s East Coast in the early hours of this morning.
The earthquake hit 710 kilometres north-east of Gisborne at 12.49am.
It had a depth of 33km and was felt by more than 8000 people, according to GeoNet.
The quake was categorised as "weak" and Civil Defence says there is no tsunami threat to the country.
