Early morning 4.8 magnitude earthquake shakes lower North Island

Nearly 3000 residents in the lower North Island were greeted with an early morning jolt after a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck central New Zealand.

The quake, centred south of Dannevirke at a depth of 25km, was felt by 2774 people, in Wellington and the lower North Island.

Most reported feeling light shaking at around 4.30am.

According to GeoNet the quake was felt as far north as Auckland.
