Meghan Markle gave a passionate speech in front of Jacinda Ardern, Simon Bridges and other guests.

The Duchess of Sussex has given a speech at a reception at Government House to celebrate the 125th anniversary of women's suffrage in New Zealand.

Within moments of stepping on stage, the royal drew applause from the crowd, which included Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and National Party leader Simon Bridges, after greeting them in Te Reo Māori.

Meghan said: "The achievement of the women of New Zealand who campaigned for their right to vote, and were the first in the world to achieve it, are universally admired.

"In looking forward to this special occasion, I reflected on the importance of this achievement, but also the larger impact of what this symbolises because yes, women's suffrage is about feminism, but feminism is about fairness."
