Downpours and possible thunderstorms to move over much of the country today - full forecast here

March 24, 2018

Severe weather warnings are in place for some areas today as a patch of nasty weather brings thunderstorms and heavy downpours throughout the day.

MetService has heavy rain warnings active for Taranaki, northwest Nelson and the northern Buller areas, with the Nelson and Buller rain likely to have eased early this morning.

A moderate risk of thunderstorms remains for parts of the north South Island and Taranaki, with a lower risk of storms over a broad area of the western coasts from Northland all the way down to the West Coast.

Going into the afternoon and evening tonight, storms will spread to almost all of the North Island, likely excluding only Hawke's Bay and East Cape.

In the south this afternoon, expect rain for the most part, but a risk of thunderstorms on the West Coast, South Canterbury and eastern Southland areas, and northeastern parts like Blenheim and Marlborough.

Temperatures are now starting to cool significantly, with parts of Southland down to 6 degrees overnight, MetService said - but in the north, Auckland was on 16.
