Double murderer Graeme Burton stabbed at Auckland prison - report

May 11, 2018

Prison authorities have confirmed a prisoner has been stabbed at the Auckland Prison in Paremoremo this morning.

The NZ Herald reports the stabbed prisoner is double murderer Graeme Burton.

Chief Custodial Officer Neil Beales told 1 NEWS in a statement: "Corrections Officers reacted immediately to bring the incident under control and the prisoner has been taken to hospital by ambulance for medical treatment. His condition is not life threatening.

"Police have been informed and are investigating, and Corrections will also carry out an investigation into the incident.

"Violence is never acceptable and all prisoners who resort to this behaviour will be held to account.

"Over 75 percent of the prison population have convictions for violence in their offending histories, and gang members are disproportionately identified as responsible for assaults in prison. The prisoners involved in this incident are gang affiliated.

Auckland Prison is New Zealand's only maximum security facility and accommodates some of New Zealand’s most difficult and challenging citizens."

Burton was sentenced in 2007 to life imprisonment with a 26-year minimum non-parole period for the murder of Wellington truck driver Karl Kuchenbecker in Lower Hutt's eastern hills, during a rampage that saw him shoot and assault several others as he tried to flee.

The attack happened just months after he was released from Auckland Prison after serving 14 years for killing a nightclub lighting technician.
