Divers who drowned while gathering seafood off Otago coast were brothers, police say

The two men who died while gathering seafood off the Otago coast on Tuesday were brothers, police have said.

Kereta Tatana, 24, of Ahipara, Northland, and 30-year-old Whererika Popata of Windsor, North Otago, lost their lives at Kakanui, near Oamaru.

A third man made it safely back to shore, with the trio reported missing around 5.30pm.

Police have thanked Kakanui residents who helped with the search and recovery operation.
