Dive squad to search wreckage for missing West Coast fisherman

October 18, 2017

The police national dive squad has returned to a fishing boat which ran into trouble off the south Westland coast in September in the hopes of finding a missing fisherman.

Kieran Lynch hasn't been since September 14 when he sailed out on the vessel Wendy J with two other people.

Search and rescue teams were able to save one man on board the boat who was found clinging onto a rock at Neills Beach.

Police say weather conditions have improved and they hope the dive squad will be able to search the unexplored stern portion of the wreckage which was previously inaccessible.

With the wreckage resting at a depth of about 25m, Sergeant Matt Tailby of Greymouth Police says the search could take some time.

Mr Tailby says they are hopeful they will be able to find Mr Lynch's body and return him to his family.
