Distances on iconic Cape Reinga yellow sign set to change after tourists expose inaccuracy

An error in the sign means visitors have been misinformed for decades over the distance between Cape Reinga and Bluff.

A number of tourists have spotted inaccuracies with the distances on Cape Reigna's iconic yellow sign, meaning visitors have been mis-informed for decades.

The Cape Reigna sign says it's 1452kms to Bluff and the Bluff sign says it's 1401kms to Cape Reigna.

Doctor Paul Denys from the School of Surveying at University of Otago has also found the equator and South Pole are wrong and some of the signs aren't pointing in the right direction.

"It's quite likely that they've just used an incorrect calculation method," Doctor Paul Denys told 1 NEWS.

The Department of Conservation says it has been aware of some discrepancies and they will be corrected.

However, the Cape Reigna sign is not the only sign that's off track.

The yellow landmark in Invercargill is also incorrect.

The sign pointing to Wellington and Cape Reinga is positioned around the wrong way and the coordinates for the sign itself are out 185 metres.
