Dissolution of Parliament delayed following latest Covid-19 outbreak

August 12, 2020

The 52nd Parliament was due to be dissolved today, but has been delayed due to the latest Covid crisis.

The dissolution of Parliament has been delayed following the latest Covid-19 outbreak.

New Zealand’s 52nd Parliament was due to be dissolved this morning, but as earlier reported by 1 NEWS, it has been deferred until at least Monday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said.

The dissolution brings a Parliamentary term to an end and marks the first step towards holding the general election.

The 2020 election is scheduled for September 19.

“It would be prudent to defer the disillusion of Parliament for at least a few days,” Ms Ardern said.

“That will be extended until Monday.”

They are looking at options around the election from the Electoral Commission “just so we make sure we have all those options”.

“No decisions have been made. We have some time to work through that.”
