Design concept and details of New Zealand's $53 million pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai released

May 2, 2018

The first image of the design concept for New Zealand's pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai has been released today.

Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters has also shown a model of the pavilion to the United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, during a meeting in Wellington today.

At a cost of $53 million there has been some controversy around the pavilion, with ACT leader David Seymour being its most vocal opponent when National announced the funding last year.

The 2000 square metre pavilion showcasing New Zealand is being designed by Jasmax architects and will be located in the expo's sustainability district.

The design was inspired by waka taonga and aims to "tell the story of New Zealand’s kaitiakitanga, our care for people and place".

It will feature an exhibition space, restaurant, design store and hosting facilities.

The United Arab Emirates will host 180 countries and 25 million visitors to Dubai for a six month World Expo from October 2020.

Participating nations will showcase their economic and trade capabilities alongside their culture and values.
