An extra 725 people sought social housing in the three months leading up to September.
Social Housing Minister Paula Bennett says there are now 4,602 people on the social housing register – up 18.7 percent on the June quarter.
Another 1,168 people and their families are already in social housing but seeking a transfer to another house.
Mrs Bennett says the figures reflect the current housing market and intense demand for accommodation, particularly in Auckland.
"The main reason people gave for applying for the Housing Register over the last quarter was that their current accommodation was inadequate or unsuitable," she said.
"We are pleased that people in urgent housing need are becoming more aware of the help available to them and are seeking it."
In the past year, 6,225 households have been place in social housing – 1,646 in the last quarter alone.
