That's the question Stats NZ will be asking in next year's census.

Government Statistician Liz MacPherson says her department wants to build a national picture of the state of the country's housing stock.

The data will be used to help address housing quality issues and measure housing deprivation.

Stats NZ carried out consultation on new questions to be included in the census and the topic was a top priority.

Census data is used to inform central and local government decisions – such as where to spend taxpayers' money on services like schools and hospitals.

The next census is on Tuesday, 6 March 2018 and will cost $119 million.
