Police are searching for the cyclist who hit Jaxxyn Scott in Dunedin yesterday.

The family of a three-year-old boy say the cyclist who ran him over, breaking his leg in two places, abused them before fleeing the scene in Dunedin yesterday.

Jaxxyn Scott was at Marlow Park (commonly known as the Dinosaur Park) around 1.50pm yesterday and was standing near the toilet block with his aunt Samantha Scott when he was hit by the cyclist.

The boy sustained a broken leg and bruising to his body and head.

Ms Scott told 1 NEWS the cyclist "came out of nowhere with his head down" and rode straight into the three-year-old.

"He wasn't watching where he was going, he collided with Jaxxyn who was standing side on, he went to the ground and when I got to him the bike was still on Jaxxyn.

"The guy picked up his bike and then he started swearing and abusing me, my mum and Jaxxyn and then gets on his bike like nothing happened and took off," she said.

The cyclist is described as being between 30 and 40 years old, with a slim build, a white beard and is about 170cm-175cm tall.

He was on a red/orange mountain bike and was wearing orange/yellow top, orange/brown shorts and white shoes.

The rider had come from the Victoria Road direction and after the collision rode up John Wilson Ocean Drive.

Police would like to speak to the man involved or anyone who saw him.

They are urged to contact Acting Sergeant Steven Wykes at Dunedin Central police on 03 471 4800, or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
