Crews contain wildfire near Taupō

Fire crews have contained the fire they have been battling on steep terrain north of Taupo this morning.

Emergency services were called to reports of a scrub fire near Mangakino shortly before 4pm yesterday.

The fire quickly spread into a forest area and, at the latest estimate, was covering 2.5 hectares.

Ten appliances attended the blaze, along with three helicopters, earlier reports said.

Waipapa Road is closed until further notice.

When Fire and Emergency is confident the area is safe they will hand over to forestry crews, contractors who will dampen down hot spots.
