Crews battle difficult terrain to contain large fire in Marlborough area

February 9, 2019

A large fire that started in Marlborogh overnight is now contained but is still burning.

Crews, including two helicopters, will be working on fully extinguishing the blaze this morning and dampening down hotspots, a Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson said.

Emergency services were called to the fire in Hitaua Bay about 12.30am. On arrival, it appeared to cover about 70 metres by 100 metres.

It had spread to steep bush and pine trees, making it hard for crews to deal with, the spokesperson said. The fire was only accessible by boat.

It is not believed to be related to the ongoing fire in the Nelson region.

The cause is not yet known and no one was injured in the blaze.
