One person has died after in a crash between a car and truck that has closed State Highway 1 in Rolleston, Canterbury.

Police say the incident on Main South Road occurred about 1.40pm.

The road is closed and diversions will be in place.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

The Serious Crash Unit will examine the scene.
