Court rejects argument that decision to cut down exotic trees on Auckland's Mt Albert was unlawful

December 23, 2020

A delayed effort to restore native plants on an Auckland mountain could soon get underway.

Protests started last year after some mainly Pākehā residents became unhappy with a decision by the Tupuna Maunga Authority to cut down hundreds of exotic trees on Owairaka Mt Albert.

The authority had planned to replant the slopes of the volcanic cone with 13,000 native plants.

Today the High Court rejected the argument that the authority had acted unlawfully.

* A previous version of this article incorrectly implied that the protestors referred to in the story had filed the judicial review. The judicial review’s applicants were not part of the protest group.
