Councils getting government funding to deal with freedom campers

Freedom campers represent three per cent of tourists and spent $530 million last year alone – but they also bring issues.

Urgent government funding is being given to councils to help them deal with problems created by freedom campers.

The Freedom Camping Working Group has made a number of recommendations to the Government.

To help with an influx of tourists to summer hot spots, the Government’s handing over $8 million to councils around the country to build toilets and showers, create new infrastructure and help with enforcement and monitoring.

In the longer term, law changes will be required.

That includes establishing four camping “zones” around the country to help with a nationally consistent approach.

The Tourism Minister says he’s on board with the recommendations and will work on making law changes.
