Corrections trying something new to get through to meth addicted inmates

April 1, 2018

A confronting one-man play was performed at Christchurch Men's Prison by an actor who's seen first-hand the damage caused by meth.

Corrections are using new ways to reach addicts inside prison with the performance of one man play Fire in the Meth Lab.

Christchurch Men's Prison was visited by actor John Bennett, whose brother is a methamphetamine addict, where he performed his one man play for the inmates.

This week was the first time the Australian actor has been allowed to perform behind bars.

Actor, John Bennett says: "It was very intimidating at the start and I've been very nervous all morning but because this is something I've always wanted to do.

"Halfway through i settled down, realised these guys are like my brother it was easier."

Mr Bennett's brother has been jailed three times, initially after the meth lab in his bathroom exploded.

The play has been brought into the drug treatment unit by Odyssey House, an external provider that runs a six month addiction course in prison.
