Coromandel triple-fatal crash: Car driven by the 20-year-old crossed centre line, police say

More details about the victims of the three people who died in a car crash in the Coromandel last night have been released.

Three people died and one person was critically injured after the two-car collision just before 8.30pm on the Kopu Bridge.

Police say a local couple in their 60s were in one of the cars and died at the scene.

A 20-year-old man driving the other car also died at the scene.

His 54-year-old father was the front seat passenger and remains in Middlemore Hospital.

Police say in a statement: "Initial indications suggest the car driven by the 20-year-old crossed the centre line and collided with the other car".

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
