Coromandel township upset over theft of valuable antique gates from cemetery

The theft of ornamental gates that have been at Thames' Omahu Cemetery for decades has upset the community.

The Thames-Coromandel District Council has received an outcry from upset locals - many who have commented on Facebook that they have family at rest at the cemetery - about the disappearance.

The stolen gates were for the vehicle entrance to the cemetery, and council senior communications officer Michael Dobie said they were likely more than 60 years old.

"They're very important because we don't have the budget to replace them," Mr Dobie said.

He did not know how much they cost, but said they were "quite valuable".

While the council was looking at cheaper alternatives, Mr Dobie was hopeful the police could track down the beloved originals.

It is believed the gates, donated by a family and refurbished about 40 years ago, were stolen between December 31 and January 4.

A grounds keeping contractor noticed they were missing and reported it to council, then police were also notified, Mr Dobie said.
