Cop and Good Samaritan pull unconscious man from burning car moments before it explodes in Auckland

April 20, 2018

A man has been pulled from a burning car by a police officer and a member of the public moments before it exploded in South Auckland this afternoon.

At 3.50pm today, emergency services were notified of a serious crash in a paddock off Papakura-Clevedon Rd in the suburb of Papakura.

The car was being driven by a 27-year-old and it was reported the vehicle was on fire.

Responding to the incident was Constable Jenny Sinclair, who along with a member of the public at the scene, saw that the sole occupant of the car was still inside and lapsing in and out of consciousness and badly injured.

The pair were unable to enter the car through the driver’s side due to flames.

The pair then approached the passenger side and pulled the injured driver out of the vehicle.

Police said in a statement when the pair were just meters away the vehicle exploded, firing debris in all directions.

Other emergency services arrived shortly after and the driver was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Counties Manukau Police say they are extremely proud of Constable Sinclair and the Good Samaritan, who will be thanked formally at a later time.
