Lemauga Lydia Sosene spoke to 1 NEWS after a man was shot dead in the Auckland suburb.

The Chair of the Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board has encouraged people with information to come forward to police following a fatal shooting in a residential area early this morning.

In a statement Detective Inspector Tofilau Faa Vaaelua says police were called to a location on Vine Street just before 1am today.

"While the exact cause of death has yet to be confirmed, it appears the victim suffered a gunshot wound," Inspector Vaaelua says.

Chair of the Māngere-Ōtāhuhu Local Board Lemauga Lydia Sosene spoke to 1 NEWS about the incident.

"This is a really resilient community - family-orientated - and something has happened," Lemauga Lydia Sosene told 1 NEWS.

The incident happened on Vine Street, Māngere in the early hours of March 10.

"There are some people that will know people that are affected so it's about how do you pick up the pieces and go forward?"

Ms Sosene explained: "[The Māngere] community continues to punch above its weight in terms of just getting food on the table and being employed, being involved, volunteer hours - hundreds and hundreds of volunteer hours a week - so this issue, obviously, has hurt a family and we don't know the ins and outs of it, but I'm confident that the police will get to the bottom of it."

A police car inside a cordon erected around Vine Street, in Māngere.

Ms Sosene said police are currently speaking to the bereaved family, adding that she will "insist that it's got to be a coordinated manner" which allows police to do their work, as well as "bring healing for this community".

She encouraged "those perhaps involved or know something" to contact the police or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
