They have come down hard on toy retailers in the last couple of years, with some not complying with rules for toys targeted at children under three.

Ahead of Christmas, the Commerce Commission's released a warning video showing the awful consequences of selling a toy that doesn't meet safety standards.

They have come down hard on toy retailers in the last couple of years, with some not complying with rules for toys targeted at children under the age of three.

Anna Rawlings from the Commerce Commission told TVNZ’s Breakfast what they found during inspections is there are a large number of retailers who have no idea there are any obligations relating to toys.

She said a lot of retailers don’t have systems in place to make sure they are complying with safety laws.

“We have prosecuted importers primarily who have not complied with those obligations.

“The maximum fine for breaching the obligations is $600,000.”

Rawlings gives advice to parents and caregivers on what toys to look for.

“What parents and caregivers looking for toys can do is make sure that they’re buying something that looks robust and they can ask the retailer if it has been subjected to appropriate testing.

“If something happens at home, for example a small part comes off a toy and causes concern they should return it to the retailer so they know about it.”
