From 1999 to 2002, 5000 New Zealand Defence Force personnel served in Timor.

Commemorations marking 20 years since New Zealand sent troops into the East Timor conflict are being held today.

The crisis, now known as Timor-Leste, began after people voted in favour of splitting from Indonesia after 25 years of occupation.

Defence Minister Ron Mark is attending events in the country's capital, Dili.
