Commemorations marking 20 years since New Zealand sent troops into the East Timor conflict are being held today.

The crisis, now known as Timor-Leste, began after people voted in favour of splitting from Indonesia after 25 years of occupation.

From 1999 to 2002, 5000 New Zealand Defence Force personnel served in Timor.
