Close-knit community 'shattered' after woman fatally struck by falling log in Gisborne workplace accident

A woman has died following a workplace incident in Gisborne this morning.

Eastland Group released a statement this afternoon saying the fatality happened at Eastland Port after a female employee of ISO, the log marshalling and stevedoring company, was struck by a log falling from a shuttle truck.

Eastland said in a statement both the deceased's family and WorkSafe NZ have been notified and the death has now been referred to the Coroner.

Following a karakia, the port has been closed for the day, as a mark of respect and to allow her colleagues to reflect and grieve, Eastland Port general manager Andrew Gaddum said.

"This is a close-knit team in a close-knit community, and we’re shattered," he said.

"Our thoughts are with her whanau, friends and work mates. We will do everything we can to support the many people who have been so deeply affected by this loss."
