The future of food is on the agenda at NZ AgriFood Week in the Manawatu with a focus around the state of our primary sector and its future.

The future of food is on the agenda as thousands attend NZ AgriFood Week in the Manawatu with the conversation expected to be centred around the state of our primary sector and its future.

The theme - Food for Who? - will focus on some of the major challenges that New Zealand agriculture industries are embarking on, Central Economic Development Agency's chief executive Linda Stewart told TVNZ 1's Breakfast programme.

Climate change, an increase in urbanisation, reducing resources and skill shortages are some of the challenges ahead for the future of food in New Zealand, Ms Stewart told the programme.

She says with a change in consumer demands and changing needs, horticulture will play a more increasing role.
