Clean up underway after oil spill

A clean-up is underway to contain an oil spill in the Whangarei Harbour tonight.

Marsden Point Oil Refinery

The oil spill happened around 4pm when a ship carrying crude oil unloaded at Marsden Point Oil Refinery.

Refining NZ says one ship is working to remove the oil from the water and booms are in place to stop the oil washing onto nearby beaches.

Greg McNeil, Refining New Zealand's spokesperson says they aren't sure where the oil leak is coming from and whether it's still leaking.

Divers have been called to investigate the cause.

Refining NZ says they have been discharging the crude oil from the ship to their onshore tanks.

The clean-up will continue overnight.
