Clean up cost of $1.6 billion for rotting Auckland DHB buildings disputed by Health Minister

David Clark said the Counties Manukau DHB isn't the only one with leaky buildings, after alleged funding neglect by the last government.

The Health Minister has told 1 NEWS that Counties Manukau District Health Board isn't the only one with leaky buildings.

David Clark said he's visited nearly every DHB in the country since being elected to Government and that "many of them have major building issues ahead of them as a result of the nine years of neglect in the health system under the previous Government".

While Dr Clark would not say which health boards are impacted, he's been assured that patient or staff safety is not at risk.

Today the Minister met with the acting chair of Counties Manukau, Rabin Rabindran , to discuss its rotting and mouldy buildings.

Dr Johnson said there are 15 problematic sites and the clean-up cost is estimated to be $1.6 Billion, but David Clark has doubts about the numbers.

"I suspect that $1.6 billion is not an accurate number at this stage," Dr Clark said.

"They have not yet done the work to quantify the costs of the building project costs ahead of them.

"I've sought an assurance that they will come to me with a clear plan for prioritising them and a clear picture of how they will handle these issues into the future."
