The Government has approved a business case and funding for the $473 million project.

Christchurch is a step closer to getting its long-awaited stadium after the Government approved a business case and funding for it.

The multi-use arena project has had $220 million set aside for it.

The project is expected to cost a total of $473 million, with the Christchurch City Council set to pick up the remaining costs.

New plans for a multi-use stadium and metro sports centre were released today, seven years on from the earthquakes.

The goal is to get construction underway next year so the arena can open in 2024.
