Christchurch's Berlin Wall slabs to be tested for asbestos

June 19, 2019

The harmful substance has been found in other sections of the wall around the world.

The Christchurch City Council has been forced to check sections of the Berlin Wall, which were gifted to the city, for traces of asbestos.

The harmful sustance has recently been found elsewhere on donated fragments of the historic barrier that once separated East and West Germany.

The council says that all necessary precautions will be taken before the concrete slabs, gfted to Christchurch as a public art installation last week, will be displayed.

Two large pieces of the historic wall are proving contentious as the city decides where to put them.
