Christchurch terror attack: Police welcome people who 'surrender their firearms' as NZ's largest investigation underway

March 18, 2019

Police are welcoming people who decide to surrender their firearms, as New Zealand's largest police investigation continues.

Police Commissioner Mike Bush outlined the huge number of resources involved in the Christchurch mosque terror attack case during a press conference this afternoon.

"We have more than 250 officers and support staff dedicated to this inquiry.

"This is now an international investigation which includes staff from the FBI and Australian Federal Police on the ground in New Zealand, as well as investigators assisting in Australian states," Commissioner Bush said.

After Jacinda Ardern said today gun law reforms will soon be announced by Cabinet, police are welcoming those wanting to surrender their firearms.

"As per existing processes we are happy for people to surrender their firearms to police.

"We would ask that they please call their local Police Station or Arms officer first for advice on the safe transport of the firearm to Police and to alert our staff ahead of time, given the current situation," Commissioner Bush said.

Police also thanked the public for their support over this tough period.
