March 16, 2019

Brenton Tarrant has appeared in the Christchurch District Court. The judge cleared the public from the courtroom and ordered media not to show the accused’s face.

Brenton Tarrant, 28, has appeared in court charged with murder following yesterday's mosque attacks in Christchurch.

During his brief appearance Tarrant, who wore a white boiler suit, was flanked by two armed officers, and handcuffed.

He was silent and repeatedly scanned the room looking around at media.

He is charged with one count of murder. The victim cannot be named.

It is expected that more charges will follow.

The courtroom was closed to public.

Tarrant, who can be named but whose face must not be shown, has been remanded in custody without plea until April 5.
