Christchurch road closed since 2011 earthquakes finally set to re-open

Sumner Road will again connect the coastal villages of Lyttleton and Sumner.

Business owners and residents in two Christchurch villages only have to wait two more days for the main road that links them to re-open.

Sumner Road through Evans Pass, which connects Sumner with Lyttelton, has been closed following extensive damage from the February 2011 earthquakes.

Work began to repair the 2.6 kilometre road in October 2016. It’s one of the Christchurch City Council’s biggest post-quake projects.

The reopening is being welcomed by both the Lyttelton and Sumner Business Associations, who say it’ll encourage more people to visit as the road cuts the drive time between the two suburbs by up to 30 minutes.

The road officially reopens to the public this Friday at 6pm.
