Christchurch hunger striker loses 3kg as protest enters third day, vows to continue

April 19, 2018

Peter Glasson began his hunger strike at midnight, because his claim still hasn’t been sorted since 2011.

The Christchurch homeowner who vowed not to eat again until his earthquake claim with government insurer Southern Response is sorted has entered his third day of protest - weaker but defiant.

Peter Glasson says he is losing a kilogram a day but is determined to continue the hunger strike if required.

Seven years on from the Christchurch earthquakes, Mr Glasson's family claim still hasn't been resolved.

Yet after beginning his hunger strike at midnight on Monday this week, outside the Southern Response office in Addington, some progress has been made.

Dr Megan Woods, Minister for Greater Christchurch Regeneration has asked that the communication and hopefully the resolution with Southern Response be brokered by the Residential Advisory Service (RAS).

RAS is seeking to identify a process that will resolve the claim the Glassons have with Southern Response.

Mr Glasson and his wife Anne said in a statement today they are hopeful these discussions will have a positive outcome and are acting entirely in "good faith".

Mr Glasson will be undergo a planned medical check tomorrow.

In the seven years since the 2011 quake, Mr Glasson says Southern Response has used bullying tactics and the court process to slow things down.

"There's 800 families involved in fighting Southern Response at the moment. And I'd like to know whether there's a proper other process that takes out the kind of antagonism and dishonesty that Southern Response have exhibited to date," he told 1 NEWS.

The company said previously it has been unable to agree with the Glassons on the extent of damage and repairs required, but would consider further mediation.
