Christchurch chiropractor promotes koha system, with clients paying what they can afford

Connect Chiropractic runs off a koha system where patients pay what they can afford.

A Christchurch practice has the goal to make chiropractic care available to everyone, regardless of their financial background.

Connect Chiropractic in Ferrymead runs off a koha system. Clients do have to pay a consultation fee, but after that they simply pay what they can afford following each treatment.

Owners Matt and Alex Wild say it’s important "money" doesn’t get in the way of prioritising health. They also say when it comes to back injuries, it’s important people don’t put it off.

"When people are functioning properly, they’re better able to contribute to society. It has a larger ripple effect than simply giving affordable treatment," Matt Wild said.

Connect Chiropractic’s part of a network of more than 3500 organisations working for social change.

The Akina Foundation, which advocates for them, says these models are on the rise and organisations like this are big contributors to the economy as they help solve big social and environmental issues in New Zealand.

Akina’s just partnered with the Government for the next three years to help boost the sector.
