Christ Church Cathedral dean Lynda Patterson has died following a recent illness.
The Anglican Church tonight confirmed the 40-year-old died at home of "natural causes" following an illness which was not disclosed.
Bishop Victoria Matthews has paid tribute to Ms Patterson.
"Lynda was highly respected across the Diocese and Province and we all benefitted from her extraordinary preaching and teaching. She was also a great pastor who brought both compassion and appropriate humour to every situation," says Ms Matthews.
Ms Patterson had overseen the move to the transitional cathedral in Latimer Square after the iconic Christ Church Cathedral was badly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake.
She recently gave the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge a guided tour of the transitional cathedral during the Royal Tour in April.
