A child has drowned this afternoon after falling from a wharf on Auckland's North Shore.

Emergency services were called to the incident at Torpedo Bay, Devonport, about 3.15pm, and a five-year-old boy was rescued by Coastguard shortly after falling into the water.

Police have said in a statement, medical treatment was provided immediately however it was unsuccessful.

Two people also went into the water to try and rescue the young boy.

One person received medical treatment at the scene but has not been taken to hospital, the second person did not require any medical treatment.

St John say they sent four ambulances to the scene.

Staff at the Torpedo Bay Café in Devonport said they saw three kids running on the boat ramp into the water and believe one of them fell in, as they were soon after called to "come and help" but weren't sure what for.

Police said they will refer to death to the Coroner.
