Charities that help animals in emergencies set to get $1.5m Government funding boost

August 28, 2018

$1.5m had been set aside for emergency training, but that did not include rescuing animals.

Animal charities that rescue and support animals in emergencies are set to get a $1.5 million government cash injection.

The Greens announced animal welfare organisations will now have equal access to the $1.5 million set aside for the Emergency Management Adult Community Education fund to support training.

Steve Glassey from Animal Evac NZ Trust welcomes the funding.

"[During the] earthquakes that happened in Christchurch people breached the cordon to go back for their pets," he told 1 NEWS.

"In Edgecumbe people breached the cordon to go back to get their pets, putting themselves and others at risk. So this is more about not just animal safety this is about people safety as well."

Animal Evac is hoping this will make communities more resilient and keep families, even the four footed members, safe when disaster hits.
