Charities benefit from viral ice challenge

A new challenge which has gone viral across social media has helped raise $20,000 for the Cancer Society in the past week.

The challenge requires nominated participants to have a bucket of icy water thrown over their head. They have 24-hours to complete the mission from the time they are nominated and if they don't complete the dare they have to donate $100 to charity.

If you complete the challenge then you only have to donate $10.

John Loof from the Cancer Society says a week ago he had no idea the challenge existed.

"I never ever heard of it now we're hearing about it an awful lot." says Mr Loof.

Thousands of Kiwis are filming themselves, nominating their pals and uploading their clips to Facebook.
