Charge laid after two-year-old girl killed by gunshot wound in South Auckland

A child has been fatally shot in the Auckland suburb of Mangere Bridge today.

Police say they were called to the property on Favona Rd where they found the body of a two-year-old girl.

"Our inquiries have so far revealed she suffered a gunshot wound, it has proven fatal," Detective Inspector Faa Va'aelua said.

A 26-year-old man from Mangere has been charged with unlawful possession of a pistol.

He will appear in the Manukau District Court tomorrow.

Names or relationships have not been revealed as police seek to inform next of kin.

They would not say whether it was accidental or not and that inquiries are in the early stages.

A shotgun was recovered from the scene where none of the occupants hold a firearms licence, police say.

The little girl lived at the address with her three siblings and parents.

A neighbour told a ONE News cameraman that a "loud bang" was heard in the area at the time of the incident.

A tarpaulin has been erected at the front of the property.
