Central Otago wineries dodge another bullet after fears frost could damage grapes

Central Otago wineries have dodged a bullet for the second night in a row after fears frosts could wipe out grapes. 

Viticulturist James Dicey said it was warmer overnight than they expected.

He says they will continue to take precautionary measures by deploying choppers and keeping wind machines on standby.

"It's just a matter of waiting it out," he said.

They aren't in the clear yet however. Tonight and tomorrow night temperatures are forecast to be around five degrees, dropping to three by Sunday night.

Mr Dicey says often they've had frosts at those temperatures.

He also said as the weather gets better, it’ll be important they monitor how quick the snow is melting on the hills.
