Catamaran lifted by crane back into water after Nelson storm thrust yacht onto rocks

It blocked access to approximately 30 properties and drew crowds of spectators throughout the day.

A yacht washed ashore by a gusty storm in Nelson has been successfully returned to the water this morning.

The catamaran, aptly named 'Stray Cat', was pulled up over rocks and onto the road in Monaco, Nelson, in the early hours of yesterday morning.

It blocked access to approximately 30 properties and drew crowds of spectators throughout the day.

A crane was used to lift the yacht from the road at 9am today.

It cut power to thousands of homes and even lifted a boat out of the water.

Owners of the Abel Tasman Sailing Adventures vessel Jane-Maree and Martin Holmes told 1 NEWS they were grateful for an "uneventful" end to the saga.

They'll now wait for high tide this afternoon to take the vessel further out to sea.
