A planned recycling plant will soon address one of New Zealand's most dire waste problems, and turn it into a profit.
Environmental technology company Eneform is set to have a two-line plant set up in Rolleston next year, which will turn tyres into valuable by-products.
The plant breaks the tyres down under high temperatures but doesn’t burn them. Unlike the previous forms of pyrolysis, it’s extremely efficient and creates a tiny amount of waste, in fact, the only gas produced is recycled to fuel the system.
The line is capable of handling all of the South Island’s end-of-life tyres and will produce an estimated 5.6 million litres of eco-diesel, 3,000 tonnes of carbon which can be sold overseas, and 1,100 tonnes steel.
It’s hoped the same technology could also be used in another plant to process plastics.
New Zealand creates around five million end-of-life tyres each year and sends 250,000 tonnes of plastic to landfills.
