British national accused of being involved in roofing scam pleads not guilty

One of the British nationals accused of being involved in a roofing scam has pleaded not guilty.

Tommy Ward, 26, has appeared in the Auckland District Court via an audio visual link from where he's being held in custody.

He faces at least three charges of obtaining by deception and using forged documents.

Ward's lawyer entered the not guilty pleas on his behalf and asked for another court date in June for a case review hearing.

He will remain in custody.

The second accused man, 25-year-old William Donohue, has been remanded in custody without plea at his appearance.

It's so he can have further discussions with his lawyer about what his plea will be.

A lawyer acting on behalf of Donohue's existing lawyer said there needed to be a brief adjournment so instructions for his plea could be taken.

He will appear in court again next week.

A third man, James Nolan who's 26, was also charged but skipped the country because of a blunder by border staff.

Nolan fled on someone else's passport, and while a discrepancy was picked up by the electronic border gate at the time, a Customers officer allowed Nolan through.

All three came into the country on holiday visas.
